Wisdom Teeth Overview
The average adult has thirty-two teeth by age eighteen: sixteen teeth on the top and sixteen teeth on the bottom. Each tooth in the mouth has a specific name and function. The teeth in the front of the mouth (incisors, canine and bicuspid teeth) are ideal for grasping and biting food into smaller pieces while the back teeth, or molar teeth, are used to grind food up into a consistency suitable for swallowing.
However, the average mouth is made to hold only 28 teeth. It can be painful when 32 teeth try to fit in a mouth that holds only 28 teeth. These four other teeth are your third molars, also known as “wisdom teeth”.

Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?
Anthropologists believe wisdom teeth were the evolutionary answer to our ancestor’s early diet of coarse, unprocessed food. We needed wisdom teeth for the extra chewing power they provided. Now with modern food and the use of utensils, wisdom teeth are unnecessary for chewing food. Evolution has also shown that over time, our jaws have become relatively smaller in relation to our enlarged cranial vault required for brain development. This imbalance of unnecessary teeth in an environment of less room to erupt into the mouth causes many wisdom teeth to be impacted and not able to erupt fully into the mouth.

Let face it, nobody wants to see the oral surgeon, but Dr. Kienle and the staff at the Ft. Washington office made it a more pleasant experience. I had a wisdom tooth removed, a molar removed and a bone graft. I initially wanted to have the extractions done separately because the recovery would be more difficult. (at least in my mind) Dr. Kienle explained that it would be better as one procedure due to reduced anesthesia risk and the recovery wouldn't be too uncomfortable. He was right, In my case the post procedure discomfort has been OK. Dr. Slone's recommendation and the information presented on the web site is what brought me to your practice. What was most important to me was the fact that Dr. Kienle has a medical degree as well as the dental degree. When being put under general anesthesia, I want a doctor with medical training if something unforeseen happens. The nursing staff was great. Overall a positive experience.
