What Are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants Presentation

To provide you with a better understanding of dental implants, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to dental implants are discussed.

Dental Implants Presentation

Dental implants themselves are titanium posts which are inserted into the jaw bone where teeth are missing. These titanium anchors act as tooth root substitutes. They are surgically placed into the jaw bone by Dr. Kienle, Dr. Steinkeler and Dr. Gunawardena, your oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong, permanent foundation for artificial teeth. Small posts are then attached to the implant which extends up through the gum tissue. These posts provide stable anchors for prosthetic replacement teeth, caps or crowns placed by your primary dentist. Dental implants are a team process. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon performs the surgical phase, placing the dental implants into the bone. Then your primary dentist does the dental phase placing the teeth on top of the implants.

Dental implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.

Who is a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Current state of the art techniques allow almost anyone who is missing a tooth to be a candidate for dental implants. Drs. Kienle, Steinkeler and Gunawardena have the experience and knowledge to provide anyone with the opportunity to have dental implants. Drs. Kienle, Steinkeler and Gunawardena have over 50 years of combined experience reconstructing patients with dental implants. However, certain patients (such as smokers and head and neck cancer and radiation patients) can have an increased incidence of implant difficulties and failures. Special procedures may be necessary when Drs. Kienle, Steinkeler and Gunawardena treat these patients.

Drs. Kienle, Steinkeler and Gunawardena work directly with you and your primary dentist to develop a personalized dental implant treatment plan. They use many different dental implant systems to accommodate a multitude of treatment plans or preferences. These dental implant systems include Straumann, Biomet 3i, Zimmer, Nobel and Keystone. Other systems can also be utilized depending on the patient and dentist preference.

Dental Implants FAQs

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost of dental implants vary depending on the type of implant, the number of implants, any related required procedures such as bone grafting and any coverage for them.

After a consultation our billing office will gladly provide an estimate for the procedures you need.

Do implants last forever?

Compared to other replacement options for missing teeth, dental implants have the best long-term success rate.

However, the success of dental implants depends on several variables including care, smoking status and general medical health.

Most patients keep them long term, and they still require the same care and attention natural teeth require.

They need:

  • immaculate oral hygiene
  • regular dental visits including x-rays
  • and a professional cleaning from a hygienist

How long after dental implants can I eat normally?

Most patients are able to slowly return to a normal diet after the first few weeks and progress to a fully chewing when the implants are restored after a few months.

How long do stitches take to dissolve after dental implants?

Most stitches dissolve after a week

How long does it take for dental implants to heal?

The initial healing of the gums is just a few weeks but the full healing of the bone is several months.

Patient Review by Lourdes d

It was a good experience, even for me, I am afraid of any dental procedure. My first visit was for an extraction and my second visit was for my implant. The Doctor and the entire staff that works in the office are amazing. I will recommend the visit of this office for dental procedures to my friends and family for sure.
